Does California’s First Speed Camera Installation in San Francisco Reduce Speeding? A Quasi-Experimental Analysis
This project, led by researchers at UC Berkeley’s SafeTREC, evaluates the effectiveness of California's first speed camera implementation using a quasi-experimental design based on telematics data. San Francisco became the first of six cities in California to pilot speed cameras in 2025 following the passage of State Assembly Bill 645, and the performance of its program has policy implications for the potential broader rollout of speed cameras across the state. The San Francisco pilot program involved installing 56 speed cameras at 33 high-risk locations. Using a quasi-experimental design that leveraged data from SFMTA citations and INRIX data on vehicle speed and volume, the study team found that the cameras successfully reduced speeding compared to selected control locations after adjusting for fixed effects. The preliminary findings indicate that most speed-related behavior change occurred during the initial warning period, with evidence of sustained change throughout the citation period. In addition, the cameras appear to be more effective on higher speed roads. Notably, speeding reduced at both the treatment and control sites, indicating a potential citywide impact from a limited application of automated enforcement.

Advancing Bicyclist Safety Through Innovative Human Factors Research

This webinar explores cutting-edge methodologies for understanding and improving cyclist safety through integrated human factors research. The presentation will showcase current research efforts addressing the critical need to protect vulnerable road users (VRUs) in urban environments conducted at the University of New Mexico and the University at Buffalo. Lisa L. Losada-Rojas, alongside researchers from the University of New Mexico, will show how multi-modal data collection, which including heart rate variability, eye tracking, subjective responses, and performance metrics, reveals critical insights into cyclist experiences during motor vehicle interactions. Key topics include validating workload measures across naturalistic and virtual environments, identifying physiological stress thresholds related to infrastructure design and vehicle proximity, and exploring how vehicle features like tinted windows and in-vehicle distractions affect driver detection of VRUs. Austin Angulo from the University at Buffalo's Transportation Research and Visualization Laboratory (TRAVL) will complement this discussion by sharing expertise on advanced virtual reality applications for transportation safety research, including digital twin technology, pre-construction intervention safety testing, and connected technologies for improving operations and safety.

Pedestrian Safety at Transit Bus Stops: Insights from National and State Crash Data

Transit trips often require walking to access and egress from bus stops, which must therefore be safely accessible for pedestrians using transit. This research examines how pedestrian safety at bus stops has been studied using crash data and reviews national, state, and local datasets to assess the availability of transit-related information to support pedestrian safety analyses at bus stops. A nationwide fatal pedestrian crash dataset identified in the review is used to distinguish transit bus stop-related pedestrian crashes from other nearby pedestrian crashes. A state-level case study using Minnesota crash data further examines risks associated with walking to and from transit by analyzing crash characteristics and police-report narratives. Overall, this work demonstrates how dedicated fields for information related to transit bus stops in crash data can be leveraged to better understand pedestrian safety concerns at bus stops and support transportation planners and transit agencies in addressing these risks.

Right Turn on Red Maneuvers: Vulnerable Road User Safety Concerns

Right turn on red (RTOR) has been widely promoted as an energy-saving measure since the 1970s, but recent research calls this justification into question. Analysis by San Diego State University's Dr. Bruce Appleyard and Cal Poly's Dr. Anurag Pande shows that RTOR movements increase safety risks for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers, while providing only marginal air quality benefits.
